Growing Mushrooms on Straw

We're still working on this page, please check back later for a more detailed guide on how we prefer to grow at Shroomhouse!

Ready to Start Growing?

Our grain spawn is easy to use with Chopped Straw, Hydrated Lime, and 5 Gallon Buckets. Check out this great video by Tony at FreshCap Mushrooms here demonstrating the basics. In this video, Tony is using wood chips soaked in hot water, but we prefer using straw that's been soaked in hydrated lime like in this video. This can be done in any large container: a storage tote, 55 gallon drum, or even a kiddie pool!

Note: Hydrated lime, though approved for organic use, is hazardous because it significantly raises the pH of water. Adding a rain barrel spigot to your container makes draining the lime water safer and easier. This runoff has negligible soil impact, but you can neutralize it with vinegar or drain it near alkaline-loving plants.

Prepare Your Straw: Submerge chopped straw in hot water (170°F) for 90 minutes; or alkaline water (pH 11.5) for 8 hours. Drain until the pasteurized straw reaches field capacity, then spread it onto a clean table.

Inoculate Your Grain Spawn: Mix grain spawn with pasteurized straw at a ratio of 1:10 by weight. Fill mushroom grow bags, 16" poly tubing, or a Shroombox with your substrate, then store at 68-72°F for 7-14 days.

Caring for Your Mushrooms: Mushrooms will start to grow anywhere there is oxygen and moisture. If you're growing in a bucket or poly tubing, it should already have aeration holes poked; if you're using mushroom cultivation bags, you will need to cut an "X" on the side. Be sure to spray with water at least 5 times a day or create a humid environment for it to grow in - for blue oysters, this can even be outside on a humid night!
