• 1. Pasteurize

Submerge chopped straw in hot water (170°F) for 90 minutes; or alkaline water (pH 11.5) for 8 hours. Drain thoroughly, then spread the straw onto a table.

  • 2. Inoculate

Mix grain spawn with pasteurized straw at a ratio of 1:10. Fill mushroom grow bags or poly tubing with your substrate, then store at 68-72°F for 7-14 days.

  • 3. Fruit

Mushrooms will start to grow anywhere there is oxygen and moisture. This can be as simple as cutting a hole in your container and watering it with a bottle!

West Coast Mycology

In Northern California, we have plenty of straw - and plenty of people who like to eat mushrooms! We're on a mission to bring them together with cleaner, more flavorful mushrooms grown on higher quality substrates. Our cultures are bred in-house and selected for their rich flavor when grown on grasses like straw and alfalfa.

Cultivation Workshop 1/4

Our next workshop is scheduled for January 4 - have a drink with us and learn how easy it is to grow mushrooms at home! You'll leave with 2 mushroom grow kits, new friends, and a budget-friendly shopping list to help you get started with mycology.
